Johnston Builders Ltd. is looking for motivated Journeyperson and Apprentice Carpenters to join our team on a full-time basis.
These positions are based out of our St. Albert, Alberta or Whitehorse, Yukon offices, with opportunities to work on a diverse range of commercial, institutional and light industrial projects across Western Canada.

What You’ll Do
As a Carpenter with JBL, you will work alongside our site teams to complete a variety of carpentry and general construction activities on commercial and light industrial projects.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Performing commercial and light industrial carpentry using appropriate construction methods, tools and equipment.
- Reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications and shop drawings.
- Completing layouts and determining appropriate materials, measurements, work sequences and construction methods.
- Performing framing and sheathing installation.
- Installing doors, windows, hardware, millwork and specialty products.
- Constructing concrete formwork.
- Installing stairs, railings and related building components.
- Using appropriate construction mathematics to complete accurate layouts and installations.
- Checking completed work for level, square, plumb, dimensions and proper location.
- Participating in quality assurance, quality control and safety documentation as directed by the Foreman or Superintendent.
- Maintaining a clean, organized and safe work area.
- Supporting other members of the site team and performing related duties as required.
What You Bring
We are looking for people who take pride in doing quality work and contribute positively to the team.
Journeyperson candidates should have:
- A recognized Journeyperson Carpenter certification or equivalent qualification from a provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority; or
- For experienced, non-ticketed carpenters, documented proof of trade hours relevant to commercial and/or industrial carpentry.
- Previous experience in commercial, institutional, multi-residential and/or light industrial construction.
Apprentice candidates should have:
- Registration as a Carpenter Apprentice with a recognized provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority; or
- Relevant carpentry experience with documented trade hours for candidates pursuing apprenticeship certification.
All candidates should have:
- Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and shop drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- The ability to work independently with appropriate direction and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn.
- A positive, professional and approachable attitude.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
- A commitment to working safely.
- The ability and willingness to travel and stay out of town when required.
Compensation & Benefits
JBL offers a competitive compensation and benefits package that includes:
- Full-time employment averaging 40 hours per week, with opportunities for overtime.
- Overtime paid in accordance with applicable employment standards.
- Competitive hourly wages based on experience, qualifications and project location.
- Living-out allowance and/or applicable compensation for eligible out-of-town work.
- Company RRSP contributions matching employee contributions up to 5% (after 3 months).
